Duke Kunshan University Librarian Elected to IFLA Standing Committee

Dr. (Helen) Hong Xu, University Librarian of Duke Kunshan University (DKU), has been elected as a Standing Committee member on the IFLA Library Buildings and Equipment Section for the term 2023-2027.

The International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA) represents the global interests of library and information professionals and strives to improve services worldwide. IFLA officially began in 1929 with 15 members from 15 countries. Today, IFLA has over 1,500 Members and Affiliates from around 150 countries worldwide.

The IFLA Library Buildings and Equipment Section has a special focus on matters of design, construction, furnishing and equipment of all types of libraries. Dr. Xu will participate in the IFLA World Library and Information Congress, held in Rotterdam, The Netherlands, from August 21-25, 2023. During her term of service, Dr. Xu will work closely with committee members around the world in meetings and conferences to re-imagine and advocate the user-centric design concept of modern libraries.

Dr. Xu is also the Vice Chair for Special Committee of Library Building And Equipment of Library Society of China. She has been heavily involved in the library building design, furnishing, and equipment in Phase II DKU campus construction. The standalone library building is completed and will be put into service in 2023-2024 academic year. It is about 12,000 m² with four floors and a basement, which creates more space for individual and group studies. With the increased library size, a wide range of facilities and rooms will be open for use, including Book Publishing & Printing Studio, Data and Visualization Workshop, Digital Imaging & 3D Form Lab, Outdoor Garden, Tea House, and a 24-hour Study Room.
