At the end of July, the DKU library put out a call to the entire DKU community for one book recommendation for the Class of 2026. We received 113 submissions from faculty, staff, graduate students, and undergraduate upperclassmen.
The result is a diverse and vivid book list that contains many reflections, interpretations and sources of inspiration from people’s previous reading experiences. Looking through the titles is a trip through a wonderland; there is science fiction that shows us how our society may evolve (such like Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep by Philip K. Dick, The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet by Becky Chambers, 三体 by 刘慈欣); there are titles discussing higher education and its influence or those that provide models for young people (such as Excellent Sheep by William Deresiewicz, General Education in a Free Society by Harvard University Committee); there are stories about courageous and provocative people in periods of chaos and war (such as The Beekeeper of Aleppo by Christy Lefteri, A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini).
We invite all of you to attend our Let’s Hear It for Reading Event to greet and meet with book recommenders and librarians on Tuesday, Aug 23rd, at AB Lobby between 11 am to 1 pm. The exhibition will last from Tuesday to Thursday, Aug 23rd to Aug 25th. If you are a recommender, come to share more inspiration about your reading with others; if you are new to DKU, come to explore a title and immerse yourself into the world the author built. We welcome everyone to stop by to see other community members’ readings; you may find something that speaks to you.
Remember, “whenever you read a good book, somewhere in the world, a door opens to allow in more light.”
