Speakers’ Profiles

Dr. Gao Xiqing

Trustee Emeritus, Duke University

Former Vice Chairman and President, China Investment Corporation

Gao Xiqing is the former Vice-Chairman and President of the China Investment Corporation. He was Vice-Chairman of the National Council for Social Security Fund of China between February 2003 and 2007, and was Vice-Chairman of the China Securities Regulatory Commission (CSRC) between 1999 and February 2003. He was an adjunct professor at the Law Schools of Tsinghua University, University of International Business and Economics (UIBE), and Duke University School of Law.

Mr. Gao received his B.A. equivalent in 1978 and a Master of Laws in 1981, both from UIBE. As a Richard Nixon Scholar, he attended Duke University School of Law and obtained his Juris Doctor degree in 1986. From 1986 to 1988, he practiced law with a major Wall Street firm before returning to China. As a co-founder of the Stock Exchange Executive Council, he was instrumental in the founding of the CSRC and the establishment of the Shanghai and Shenzhen Stock Exchanges in the early 1990s. As one of the founding members of the CSRC, Mr. Gao served as its General Counsel and Director of Public Offerings from 1992 to 1995. From 1997 to July 1999, Mr. Gao served as Vice-Chairman and CEO of BOC International, the investment banking arm of Bank of China in Hong Kong. Since 1986, Mr. Gao has served as either a member or the chairman of arbitration panels for hundreds of international trade or investment disputes between Chinese and foreign companies, both under the CIETAC and the Arbitration Institute of Stockholm Chamber of Commerce.

Dr. Keping Wu

Associate Professor of Anthropology, Duke Kunshan University

Dr. Wu’s research focuses on the intersections of religion, gender, urbanization, public good, ethnicity, and charisma. She is the co-editor of It Happens Among People: Resonances and Extensions of the Work of Fredrik Barth (Berghahn 2019) and the co-author of Religion and Charity: The Social Life of Goodness in Chinese Societies (Cambridge University Press, 2017). She has published papers in leading academic journals including Current Anthropology, Modern China and Journal of Asian Studies. She has been a member of the American Anthropological Association and Association of Asian Studies since 2006.
