The exhibition “Where Waters Remember” highlights Kunshan’s rich cultural history; a part of Kunshan’s story involves the interactions between East and West that have taken place in the city over the past 300 years. This event will focus on Western activities in Kunshan, ranging from early missionaries to trade, diplomacy, war, and recreation, while also highlighting how these engagements were publicized back home and preserved.
《文脉昆山》展览展现了昆山丰富的文化历史。而昆山的故事里，有一部分正是过去300年里在这座城市发生的东西方交流。本次讲座将带您走进西方人在昆山的足迹——从早期传教士的步履，到贸易、外交、战争与休闲娱乐的种种片段，同时也将讲述这些交往如何漂洋过海传回西方，被记录、被报道，并留存至今。
主讲人| Speaker:
Andrew Field, Associate Professor of Chinese History, Duke Kunshan University
费嘉炯, 中国历史学副教授, 昆山杜克大学
Dr. Field (B.A. Dartmouth College, Ph.D. Columbia University) is a specialist in Chinese and East Asian languages, cultures, and history, with an expertise in the history of Shanghai. He teaches courses on Ancient Chinese History and Thought, Shanghai History, Modern Chinese History, and special courses on “Sounds in the City: Live Music Scenes in China” and “Documenting City Life.” He is the author of several books on Chinese urban culture, Shanghai urban life, and modernist literature.
费嘉炯博士（达特茅斯学院学士，哥伦比亚大学博士）是中国及东亚语言、文化和历史领域的专家，尤其专精于上海历史。他教授的课程包括中国古代历史与思想、上海史、中国近代史，以及“城市之声：中国现场音乐场景”和“记录城市生活”等专题课程。他著有多部与中国城市文化、上海都市生活及现代主义文学相关的著作。

Ryder Kouba is the Archives and Special Collections Librarian at Duke Kunshan University where he is responsible for working with the DKU community to collect and preserve university history as well as building special collections for scholarly research use. He received his Master of Science of Information Studies and Bachelor of Arts degrees from the University of Texas at Austin.
Ryder Kouba 是昆山杜克大学图书馆的档案与特殊馆藏馆员，主要负责与昆山杜克大学的社区协作，收集并保存学校历史，同时建设可供学术研究的特藏资源。他先后毕业于德克萨斯大学奥斯汀分校，获得信息学硕士学位和文学学士学位。

From the Song dynasty to the present, why have painters long been fascinated by crabs? This lecture traces the thousand-year legacy of crab paintings, exploring the brushwork of renowned masters, the auspicious symbolism of the crab motif in literati art, and its cultural significance. It also brings art and life into dialogue, offering a fresh perspective on the unique crab culture of Yangcheng Lake.
