IFLA LBES Delegation Visits DKU Library

On April 17, 2025, a delegation from the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA) Library Buildings and Equipment Section (LBES) visited the Duke Kunshan University (DKU) Library as part of their inaugural visit in China. The group included university librarians, architects, and library professionals from around the world, including Australia, Canada, Denmark, France, Spain, Uganda, and China. Dr. (Helen) Hong Xu, former University Librarian of DKU, revisited the Library as a member of the LBES Standing Committee.

IFLA LBES focuses on all aspects of planning, designing, constructing, and equipping library buildings. The section brings together experts and practitioners from around the world to exchange ideas and promote innovation in the creation of functional, inclusive, and future-oriented library spaces.

During their visit, the delegation was impressed by the innovative and user-centered spaces in DKU Library, including Faculty Collaboration Commons, Tea House, and Liu Shuang Film/Music Appreciation Room, all of which reflect DKU’s emphasis on interdisciplinary learning and student engagement.

The delegation was guided by Paul Rice, Design Principal at Perkins&Will, who was leading the design of DKU Phase 2 campus. During the sharing session in the Tea House, he shared insights into the architectural vision behind the space. He highlighted how the design integrates sustainability, adaptability, and Chinese cultural elements to create a welcoming and inspiring learning environment.

This visit served as a meaningful platform for international dialogue on the future of library design, and highlighted DKU Library’s role as a model for blending academic excellence with thoughtful, innovative space planning.
