On the afternoon of December 5, 2024, Duke Kunshan University (DKU) Library, in collaboration with the Student Accessibility Services Office, hosted a special lecture titled “Library Services for People with Dyslexia: Practices and Reflections.” The lecture was led by Dr. Man Shu from the Department of Information Management at South China Normal University, a leading expert dedicated to library service innovation, especially for individuals with dyslexia. This event is part of the library’s ongoing efforts to support underrepresented groups, continuing the mission of the “DKU Library Open Day and Autism Children’s Art Exhibition” held in August. It aims to enhance public understanding and support for the needs of minority groups through diverse activities.
Dr. (Helen) Hong Xu, University Librarian at DKU Library, warmly welcomed Professor Shu and expressed her gratitude for the valuable insights to be shared during the event, as well as her appreciation for the audience’s participation. In addition to DKU community members, the lecture opened 20 seats to the public. Library professionals from local public libraries and residents from Kunshan and Suzhou also participated in this lecture.
During the lecture, Professor Shu provided an engaging introduction to dyslexia and highlighted the challenges faced by individuals with disabilities in learning. Through interactive activities, attendees were invited to experience the challenges faced by individuals with dyslexia. She emphasized that, while dyslexia may seem like a personal issue, its impact on families, society, and the education system is far-reaching.
Additionally, Professor Shu shared her research and practical experiences in library services for children with dyslexia in China. With growing awareness of this issue, she noted that more libraries and organizations are developing specialized resources and services to help individuals with reading disabilities overcome barriers and integrate into society.

Professor Shu thoughtfully addressed each question, offering tailored suggestions for different situations.
George Hu, Director of Counseling, Wellness, Disability & Accommodation, concluded the event by thanking Professor Shu and announcing that they will host a Disability Awareness Week in April 2025 to further advocate for and support individuals with disabilities.
