Speaking of Brazil, what will you think of? Samba? Football? The Amazon rainforest? These are all good, but how about this fun fact: the cultural institutes of Brazilian embassies are called Instituto Guimarães Rosa, named after a Brazilian novelist. Wanna know who this person is and explore the vast land of Brazil beyond big cities like Rio de Janeiro or São Paulo? Come and join us in the first “Reading the World” session in 2026!
In “Reading the World,” we invite members of the DKU community from across the globe to share their favorite books, movies, etc., and talk about the intersection of culture, history, and artistic expression.
This time, our featured guest speaker is your fellow Daniel Monteiro (UG ’28) from Brazil. Two years ago, Daniel participated in DKU Library’s “Books From Home” project and donated the book Sagarana, written by João Guimarães Rosa (yes, the novelist we just talked about), that portrays northern Minas Gerais, a region with unique traditions and social circumstances in Brazil.
In this session, Daniel will tell you the stories of the landscape, the animals, and the people in the region of Minas Gerais where he grows up, through the texts of Guimarães Rosa, through his own eyes, and through his home-made pão de queijo (cheese bread)!
So why hesitate? Join us for an exciting virtual ride and ask Daniel anything you want to know about Brazil! Light refreshments will be provided.
