Borrowing Policies

Current Duke Kunshan University faculty, staff, and students may use their DKU Card to borrow materials. Other group members with DKU Card may consult the Library staff on the 1st floor Information Desk.

  • Please note that if the fine exceeds 100 RMB, patrons are not allowed to borrow any items from the Library unless the fine is paid.
  • Student fines will be uploaded to DKU Card everyday. Please check through “My Account (at the top right corner of each library’s page)” to ensure that you have no doubts about the fines.

Borrower Responsibilities

  1. You are responsible for all items you borrow until the items are returned correctly.
    • You will receive an email notification when you borrow/return a book or a device both. 
    • Please return books using the book return machines or ask a staff member for assistance. If you are unsure whether your return was processed correctly, you can: a. check your email for a confirmation; b. click “My Account” on the screen or in the top-right corner of the library’s webpage; c. verify the status via the library’s WeChat account (under More – Self-checkout).
    • If a book is not processed through book return machines or manually by staff, and it cannot be located on the library shelves or in the return carts, borrowers will be required to make compensation.
  2. You are responsible for all fees or damages you incur.
  3. Student fines will be uploaded to DKU Card everyday. Please check through “My Account (at the top right corner of each library’s page)” to ensure that you have no doubts about the fines.
  4. If students don’t return items on time and items are declared LOST, the Library will notify DKU UG/GRA Bursar Office to put service indicator hold on your student account.
  5. Do not give items you borrowed to others. You remain responsible for items until you return them.
  6. Do not let anyone else use your DKU card to borrow items.
  7. Do not depend on others to return items for you. Please note checking your account to ensure all items are properly returned.
  8. Note the time or date your borrowed items are due. Be sure to read the notices sent from the Library system.
  9. If your book is recalled you must return it by the date indicated on the recall notification. Otherwise, you will be fined 2 RMB/day.
  10. If a book you have borrowed is requested by an instructor for Course Reserves, you must return the book within 24 hours.
  11. If you receive an overdue notice for materials that you believe you returned, please reply to the notice using the online form.
  12. All patrons are required to clear their accounts by returning all borrowed items prior to graduation/termination of affiliation.

Lost Items

  1. If the loss is caused by you lending your DKU card to others, by missing your DKU card or by transferring the items you borrowed to others, etc., the Library will only seek compensation from the person recorded in the Library system as the borrower of the items. The Library won’t retrieve the items on your behalf.
  2. You are responsible for all items you borrow until the items are returned correctly: if a book is not processed through the book return machines or manually by staff, and it cannot be located on the library shelves or in the return carts, borrowers will be required to make compensation.
  3. If you lose or damage any items you borrowed, please contact the Library in time:
    • You will need to pay the actual cost for purchasing a replacement copy.
    • You will need to pay an additional handling fee of 75 RMB to cover the expenses of materials consumed in re-cataloging and processing the items such as barcodes, labels, magnetic strips, man-hour cost, etc. 
  4. If you pay the lost item replacement fee and then find the item, you will receive a refund for the replacement cost but not for the handling fee.
  5. For the items autographed by the author or editor, the fine will be 3 times the original replacement fee.
