We are saddened by the passing of Keigo Higashino (东野圭吾), the great Japanese writer, on July 23, 2026 at the age of 68. To millions of readers around the world, his name is synonymous with brilliant mysteries and unforgettable stories.
Higashino started as an engineer but resigned in 1986 to write full-time after winning the 31st Edogawa Rampo Prize（第31届江户川乱步奖）for his debut novel After School （《放学后》）in 1985. Over the following 41 years, he wrote more than 100 books. He is one of Japan’s most famous and best-loved authors.
His stories go far beyond the mere act of solving a mystery—they delve into the subtleties of human nature, the weight of difficult choices, and the intricate motives that drive people to do what they do. Equally remarkable is the way his narratives transcend the printed page: from The Devotion of Suspect X（《嫌疑人X的献身》）and Under the Midnight Sun（《白夜行》）to The Miracles of the Namiya General Store（《解忧杂货店》）, their screen adaptations have become widely beloved classics, while on stage, The Murder in Kairotei（《回廊亭杀人事件》）and The Final Curtain（《祈祷落幕时》）have enjoyed long-running theatrical success. Whether on screen, on stage, or in the original text, his characters always carry a profound emotional depth—a quiet reminder that a truly great story knows no boundaries. We are lucky that our library has many of his print books, and we hope you will borrow one to remember his genius.
