Duke Kunshan University (DKU) Library is pleased to invite you to an upcoming lecture titled “Daily Life on Jerusalem’s al-Aqsa Mosque Compound in the Ottoman Period.”
We are privileged to have Dr. Robert Schick, affiliated with the American Center of Research in Amman, Jordan, to share his research on daily life at Jerusalem’s al-Aqsa Mosque compound during the Ottoman period. Dr. Robert Schick has devoted much of his scholarly career to the history and archaeology of Jordan from the Late Roman through the Islamic periods. He received his PhD from the University of Chicago in 1987 and has also conducted extensive research on Jerusalem’s archaeological sites and monuments, particularly those of the Islamic periods. He has held teaching and research positions in Jerusalem, Hyderabad, Bamberg, and Mainz.
In this talk, Dr. Schick will explore daily life at Jerusalem’s al-Aqsa Mosque compound during the Ottoman period (1516–1917). Drawing on extensive historical documentation, he will examine how sacred and everyday life intersected through religious rituals, education, building projects, and other daily activities, offering insights into how people experienced and used this important religious space.
